General Research Fund (GRF)-Reactive bromine gases

Field and laboratory investigations of reactive bromine gases and their impact on winter air quality

Goals:

---- To determine the composition of the reactive bromine species (RBS) in the effluents of coal burning;
---- To elucidate the extent and the mechanism of photo-assisted production of RBS from coal burning;
---- To investigate the spatial extent of the RBS presence and impact on winter air quality in heavily polluted northern China.

Strategy:

The overall research comprises (1) further improvement of the state-of-the-art CIMS techniques for measurements of RHG; (2) field measurements in coal-impacted regions in the North China Plain (NCP); and (3) laboratory experiments to investigate the emission and secondary production of RBS from coal burning.
